Arrival in Zurich:
Stretch out your legs while strolling in Zurich's Old Town or along the lakefront. Would you like to do something more cultural or escape a potential rain shower? Discover one of the many museums in Zurich. Plenty of time on your arrival day? Go on a quick excursion to Europes biggest waterfalls - the Rhine Falls.
Day 1: Zurich → St. Gallen
Between Central and Eastern Switzerland, the Voralpen-Express (Pre-Alp-Express) is the most appealing way to travel. Your journey starts in Zurich, leads you along the rolling countryside of Toggenburg, continues through the 99-meter-high Sitter viaduct, and ends in the eastern Swiss city of St. Gallen. Enjoy the historical Old-Town with the Abbey area, another UNESCO world heritage site.
Day 2: St. Gallen → St. Moritz
Although this train route doesn't have an outstanding name, it will add many romantic and medieval memories to your travel diary. The entire rhine valley is full of castles and fortresses which will accompany you through your day between the mountains of Switzerland, Austria, and Liechtenstein.
Before changing trains take the chance to visit the old town of Chur which is considered to be one of the most fully preserved in the country. From Thusis, the RhB climbs through helical tunnels and over viaducts up the Albula Valley towards St.Moritz. This line, embedded harmoniously in the landscape, is a showpiece dating back to the time of railway pioneering and is part of the RhB UNESCO World Heritage.
Day 3: St. Moritz
The Bernina line between St.Moritz, Valposchiavo and Tirano connects the north and south of Europe. It travels past mountains, beside lakes and glaciers on its way down to the palm trees in Valtellina. The famous panoramic route belongs to the RhB UNESCO World Heritage.
The view of the Morteratsch glacier and the world-famous Montebello bend show, in an exemplary fashion, that the railway pioneers considered the tourists’ view when planning the route. The roof of the Rhaetian Railway lies at 2,253 meters above sea level. The adjoining Lago Bianco enchants travelers with its unique coloring.
Day 4: St. Moritz → Zermatt
From Zermatt and the Matterhorn, the panoramic trip leads over 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels over the Swiss Alps to St. Moritz. The Glacier Express winds its way through remote valleys, past sheer rock faces, idyllic mountain villages, over the Landwasser Viaduct, and through the Rhine Gorge, the Grand Canyon of Switzerland. It scales the highest point of its journey at the Oberalp Pass with ease at 2033 meters above sea level. Thanks to the large panoramic windows, a clear view of numerous summits, deep gorges, and the UNESCO World Heritage sites “Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch” and “Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/ Bernina Landscapes ” is guaranteed. The menus are prepared freshly in the onboard kitchen and served to you at your seat.
Day 5: Zermatt
It's time to take a breath and where could that be better done on the foot of Switzerland's natural landmark the Matterhorn. Nevertheless, there is way too much to explore that we could actually write it down in 1 or 2 phrases. Ask us for our recommendations!
Day 6: Zermatt → Montreux
With around 2.5 hours this is quite a calm day on the tracks and gives you the opportunity to explore some more of the canton Valais - the Matterhorn is not the only remarkable site here. Why not go to the underground lake of St. Leonard or visit the castles of Sion? For all nature lovers, we highly recommend a coffee at the Gemmi Pass - from here you might have a real chance to spot a bearded vulture, the alps largest bird of which only 9-15 pairs exist! During the evening there is nothing better than to stroll along Lake Geneva.
Day 7: Montreux →Interlaken
Another train highlight is awaiting you today. Nevertheless, before you get back on the tracks you should not miss a walk in the Lavaux vineyards or if one castle wasn't enough a visit at the famous Chateau de Chillon.
The Golden Pass Line later combines three of the most scenic regions in Switzerland, crossing the language border to arrive in the Bernese Oberland. Although this train ride is always special, we will take care to give you the cherry on the top when we will provide you with a reservation for the Belle Epoche Trains that only operate at certain times.
Day 8: Interlaken
What would be a visit to the Bernese Oberland without exploring the Jungfrau Region? Whether you decide to actually take the train to the Top of Europe or take a walk along the Männlichen mountain on the foot of the world-famous Eiger North Face. Are you into James Bond? From October 1968 to May 1969, the Schilthorn was the main filming location for "On Her Majesty’s Secret Service".
Day 9: Interlaken → Zurich
It is time to leave the Alps behind. On your way back to Zurich you will pass the blue-colored Lake Brienz, you can add a stop at the spectacular Giessbach Waterfalls, stroll around in the Old Town of Lucerne or go on one of the popular historical boat cruises on the namesake lake.
